So here is my round up for 2016. This blogpost is created really to celebrate and thank the couples who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and shooting this year. Thank-you for seeing the best in me when I often lose sight of it. For trusting me to see your wedding day in the way you want to remember it.
The best joy and fulfilment you can have in this job is their gratitude and delight when they see those photos. I have to say, it’s incredibly hard to select just a couple of favs from each wedding or shoot. I prefer to share the whole story of a wedding because each is unique in personality, mood, colour and light. But this was a good exercise in reflection and it reminds just how lovely the last year has been.
I mostly stayed at home for weddings and shoots this year, shooting in some of the most beautiful venues and locations in Ireland. What I did notice was that so many couples are coming to Ireland now from all parts of the world. Seeing this place through their eyes continually gives me a new sense of perspective and gratitude for all that we have here on this little island. Beautiful shores from the north coast of Antrim right down to the west of Cork, and manor houses and castles that are steeped in history.
I was also lucky enough to travel back to Malta for two gorgeous weddings in early summer, then highlands of Scotland and also the south of Spain in beautiful Malaga in late Summer. Myself and the family took a break in July for an unforgettable cruise around the Med stopping off along the coastlines of Italy, France and Spain. Also my own sister got married in April and I was bridesmaid/photographer for the day! Who knew that it is possible to hold a bouquet in one hand and a camera in the other! Thanks to my brother @storyofeve who helped with the photos I needed to be in :)
It takes many years in this business to find a balance. To be able to tell these wonderful stories for your clients and also have time to live your own story. At the end of 2016 I feel happy that I know my limits now. I’ve never been able to balance a day but I can balance a year. (If that makes sense!) Yes it’s hectic in the summer months, but I make up for that in the long dark months. The nurturing months as I call them. Always leaving space to reflect, experiment and grow, and to slow down and just enjoy being at home with the family.
There is a whole lot of happiness in this blogpost and creating it has made even more excited for this year to come. For 2017 I’m not on the hunt for more followers or likes. I’m on the hunt for more real engagement. Quality over quantity. I recently read words spoken by Jim Carrey and it sunk home. I’m going to try and remember them for the year ahead.
“The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is. To find real peace you have to let the armour go. Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Risk being seen in all of your glory. We are not the avatars we create. We are the light that shines through. All else is just smoke and mirrors. Distracting but not truly compelling. Choose love. Don’t ever let fear turn you against your playful heart.”
