I knew Alan and Lucy’s wedding was going to be relaxed from the moment we met. They chose Le Petit Moulin in the french countryside for their destination wedding, and as far I know it was a week of partying and a few hangovers by the pool in that beautiful gîte. It was a ‘Scottish/Norn Irish/French’ gathering. That meant a mixed bag of important wedding ingredients – good music, good food, good craic and plenty of humour. We also had the sunshine. That’s one thing us Irish wedding photographers in 2015 didn’t take for granted. In fact it was pretty hot for September and for Scottish men in woollen kilts.
I can always gage the tone of the day from the morning preps. When we arrived that morning Lucy’s sister Emily was making the hair wreath with some of the florals from the gardens. That was it. I knew we were in for a laid-back event. There were lots of French country touches in the details including ‘Biscuit favours’ from Lucy’s nanny’s village in northern France. I loved also that the tables were named after Edinburgh film festival tickets. It was a joy to shoot from start to finish. Myself and Kelly just felt like guests with cameras on the day.
On a personal note, I was reminded how grateful I am for life as a wedding photographer. It pulls me out of my introverted comfort zone in ways I’d never have imagined eight years ago. I only get to do a few destination weddings a year. With being a mum, it also means I’m also a bit of a happy homebird. So the ones that I do are incredibly special to me. I can’t thank Lucy and Alan enough for trusting in me to travel to France to document their day and for making both myself and Kelly feel so welcome. I got to witness an unforgettable celebration and I know how much these photos mean to them.
Also proud to say, after a few early anxiety attacks, I can drive on the other side of the road now too :)
